One of the things that comes with experience as an appraiser is knowing when to repair or replace a part on a vehicle. However, with today's complex vehicles more parts are being replaced. Some parts state replace only if damaged. These parts will usually be hidden damage to an auto appraiser when inspecting in the field.
After teardown at the repair shop, the shop should view the OEM repair procedures to determine if the parts can be repaired or if it is a replace only part. If you are an appraiser and question the shops decision or disagree with the shop, ask for the OEM repair procedure. If it states replace only, add that document to your claim, add a note to the estimate line, and carry on with your day. The last thing you want is the car not to be properly repaired back to its pre-accident condition, which could result in the car being unsafe for the passengers.
